Growing A Grass Head!

One of our spring projects (which is by far Miss K’s favourite one) has been growing a grass head! When I was a kid I used to think it was pretty cool growing these little guys! So we thought we would give them a try.

To make your own grass head you will need:

  • old nylon stockings
  • grass seed
  • potting mix
  • a small container
  • water proof glue
  • decorations

Cut off a 20cm piece of stocking that includes the toe. Stretch the stocking open and put in about 2 full teaspoons of grass seed, then pack in some potting soil on top of this. Fill to about the size of a tennis ball and then tie off the end of the stocking. Next you can decorate your grass head, make it a body out of a yoghurt container and sit your grass head on top of this.

When you are ready to grow the grass head dunk it in some water to moisten the soil and then half fill the container it will sit on with water too. Place it somewhere with lots of sunlight, check everyday to make sure it is keeping moist. The hair will take about 1 week to sprout and a full head takes about 4 weeks to grow.

You can experiment with lots of different hairstyles, Miss K has loved this, even though its taken a few weeks she’s kept checking on her grass head and loves giving it a haircut!

  1. I need to pin this! I remember doing something similar when I was little, but never thought to do it with my kids until now :)

    Have a great weekend :)
